What is Vitamin D?
Vitamin D is not just a vitamin. It is also a neuro-regulatory, steroid hormone that affects 3000 to 25 000 different genes in the body. For this reason, it is one of the most important nutrients for our health.
Why is Vitamin D3 in the Vitiligo store?
Vitamin D3 is the same vitamin D that our body produces in the skin and which is responsible for the pigmentation process after exposure to sunlight (or phototherapy).
Since vitamin D plays an important role in the pigmentation process, it is symptomatic that people suffering from vitiligo are deficient in this vitamin. Whether this is the cause of vitiligo is not yet proven. However, research shows that this is at least one of the aggravating factors. Vitamin D deficiency increases several health risks such as osteoporosis, high blood pressure, tuberculosis, cancer (breast, colon and prostate), sclerosis multiplex, depression, obesity and many others. People with vitiligo are known to lead to impaired autoimmunity.
How does Vitamin D work?
Vitamin D is important for the proper functioning of immune cells and for calcium absorption. This is why it is essential for maintaining healthy bones and teeth and for the skin's ability to produce pigment. Only in the presence of vitamin D is the calcium in the skin able to fulfil its role and regulate skin pigment cells (melanocytes).
About the product
The soft gelatine capsules contain pure Vitamin D3 from Quali®-D, which is derived from lanolin, a rich source of vitamin D from wool of healthy, live sheep that are kept on pastures in high-lying parts of Australia and New Zealand. Quali®-D is a pure vitamin D3 without allergens and animal ingredients and genetically unmodified. It is the same form of vitamin D3 that the body naturally produces in the skin exposed to the sun's rays.
Vitamin D3 is in capsules in sunflower oil, which makes it highly absorbable.
During the winter months, the human body is not exposed to the sufficient amount of sunlight needed to produce vitamin D. As well, with increasing age the body's ability to synthesize vitamin D by sunlight decreases.
Vitamin D contributes to:
• The proper functioning of the immune system,
• To maintain healthy bones and teeth,
• To maintain proper muscle function,
• The proper absorption and use of calcium and phosphorus in the body,
• It plays a role in the cell division process.
